Towards a Sustainable Future

Guinea, a country located in West Africa, holds significant potential in the realm of renewable energies. With its tropical climate and abundant natural resources, the nation can harness clean and sustainable energy sources to meet its growing electricity needs.

Hydropower stands out as one of the primary renewable energy sources in Guinea. The country is traversed by numerous rivers, presenting a substantial hydroelectric potential. Implementation of hydroelectric dam projects, such as the Kaléta Dam, has increased electricity production capacity. These initiatives not only diversify the energy mix but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to hydropower, Guinea boasts immense solar potential. The country enjoys generous sunlight year-round, providing substantial opportunities for the development of solar projects. The installation of solar parks and photovoltaic systems would not only increase energy capacity but also contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, biomass represents an underutilized renewable energy source in Guinea. Agricultural and forestry waste could be used to generate energy, promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste.

However, despite these opportunities, challenges persist. Guinea must overcome obstacles such as financing, resource management, and the enhancement of technical capacities to maximize its potential in renewable energies.

Guinea stands at a crucial juncture in developing its renewable energy sector. Kakara

The Kakara Hybrid Hydro-Photovoltaic Project in Guinea is located downstream of the Fatala River, 143 km from the capital Conakry, 36 km from Boffa, and 10 km from the village of Lisso. The project consists of a hydroelectric power plant and a photovoltaic power plant, with a total installed capacity of 120 MW and a multi-annual average total electricity production of 394 GWh. Of this, the installed capacity of the hydroelectric power plant is 70 MW (35 MW x 2), with a multi-annual average of 4314 hours of production, and a multi-annual average production capacity of 302 GWh. The installed capacity of the photovoltaic power plant is 50 MW on the AC side. The first year of electricity on the grid is 99 GWh, with equivalent full-load hours of 1852.7 hours. The annual average electricity on the grid over 25 years is 92 GWh, with an annual equivalent of full-load hours being 1719.9 hours.

Photovoltaic power plant

The photovoltaic power plant is located on the left bank of the hydroelectric power plant, covering an area of approximately 0.8 km², with a planned installed capacity of 50 MW on the AC side. This project includes the construction of a 225/30 kV substation, whose main task is to step up the generated voltage. The first year of electricity on the grid is 99 GWh, with equivalent full-load hours of 1852.7 hours. The annual average electricity on the grid over 25 years is 92 GWh, with annual equivalent full-load hours of 1719.9 hours.
